I was inspired to write this after reading Hearing Homer’s Song by Robert Kanigel, and then proceeding to read some of the foundational texts of oral tradition theory. It turns out that the questions which arise when comparing writing and spoken words are plentiful, and will likely be the topic of a future paper.
